How to measure your tank capacity
It’s important to know what size your oil tank is when you are ordering your oil. If you are unsure on it’s size, we have a quick way to work out how much oil your tank can hold.
Measuring your plastic heating oil tank
If your oil tank is plastic, the details of your tank can usually be found on a metal plate on the side of the tank, or embossed in the plastic e.g. If you tank has H2500 on the side, this would mean your tank is a horizontal tank and can hold 2500 litres of heating oil.
Measuring your steel heating oil tank
If your metal tank is rectangular, you can find out the amount of heating oil it can hold by completing a small sum.

1. Measure your tank and complete this sum
Volume = Height x Width x Length)
2. Take the volume x 6.25 = Gallons
3. Convert gallons into litres by doing the sum
Gallons x 4.54609 = oil capacity of your oil tank

Typically, when you buy more than 2,000 litres of heating oil, you will pay a lower price per litre than if you were buying 500 litres.
This is because it is cheaper for Suppliers to deliver one large ‘bulk’ order to one area, than it is for them to deliver several smaller orders in different areas.
